Locust

It was a yellow locust, which calls down lightning like a warrior taunts his enemy on the battlefield. When the girl continued toward it, Blue Wolf ran to stop her.

Before the old woman had hurried more than twenty steps, a great light flashed, outlining every blade of grass, every stone and stick with a white rime of fire. The air seemed to shatter with a terrible splintering sound, and Earth and sky sizzled for a sustained moment. The last sensation Blue Wolf experienced was her skin seeming to catch fire, as she fell through darkness and the scent of burned hair.

When Scratching Otter turned and looked behind her, she saw her mentor lying on her back in the grass. A wisp of smoke lifted from her gray hair.

“Grandmother!”
