At some point in our lives, we’ve all felt left out. We’re not talking about when you were the last person to race to the swings in kindy or when your teacher said ‘pair up’ and you looked around in a panic because you didn’t have a partner. We’re talking about when you’re an adult, and you experience moments when you feel like you’re being left behind. This can happen when you don’t have plans but it seems everyone occupying your Instagram Stories does, or you see two friends hanging out but you weren’t invited.

Being left out triggers the very human fear of rejection. When we feel left out, we automatically think people are moving on without us when, most of the time, that is very likely not the case. Stop pulling the emergency alarm and going into an emotional bunker.

Yes, sometimes friends will hang out and you won’t be invited.

No, this doesn’t mean they’ve woken up, made their coffee and decided you’re their mortal enemy. If it’s a one-off Saturday brunch that didn’t make it to your message inbox, it’s probably nothing to overthink about.

That said, if you’re feeling left out all the time that’s cause for thought. It might be an opportunity to reevaluate some of the friendships in your life.

Also remember you don’t need to wait for invitations. You can initiate interaction and make plans with your friends, too.
