Marianne, a single mom, was totally dedicated to her only child, Susan. When Susan moved out of state to attend college, Marianne became depressed. She believed that her sole purpose in life, raising her daughter, had come to an end and she felt lost and adrift. When she spoke to me of how they both packed the car with Susan’s belongings and drove seven hours to Susan’s dormitory, she could just as easily have been describing a funeral procession. She told me that after returning home that evening she gazed at one of Susan’s old dolls sitting on a shelf in her bedroom, and that to her it looked forlorn, as if it missed its owner. I decided to use an exercise I found in the book You Own the Power by Rosemary Altea.

“The way you tell it, that’s a very sad story,” I said. “Now I’d like you to tell me a very happy story, the happiest you can recall. But there’s one catch. It must be the same story you just told me.”

Marianne stared at me, bewildered. She then struggled to tell her story with this new, happy twist. In less than a minute her tone changed from sullen to upbeat. Describing her daughter waving goodbye from the dorm room, Marianne no longer charged the image with deep pangs of loss; now she added a sense of excitement at her daughter’s new adventure. The doll on the shelf reminded her of joyous memories of play and laughter. Within minutes Marianne discovered that her emotions had nothing to do with what had happened, but everything to do with how she had cultivated the story about what had happened.

Along the Path of Release, you finally realize that a new you is in the process of being born. Such a birth, unasked for but inevitable, is in your soul’s best interest. It becomes easier to achieve if you embrace your past and present with gratitude. If you resist this birth, you will walk the alternate path, the Path of Despair.
