As Ken walks through the prospect of death with his beautiful bride, he is aware that every moment is a gift. Therefore, he lives every day as fully and gratefully as he can. Kim often wants to protect him from her agony of sleepless nights, intravenous feedings, and terrible bouts of nausea, which are especially bad when there’s nothing left to come up. However, Ken has decided it’s his honor to accompany her.

As he lingers in Kim’s presence, it’s clear that he’s decided not to shrink back from his love. Instead he leans into it, savoring every moment he has. He thinks back to the day he promised her “in sickness and in health, until death do us part.” Now he lives those vows. In the happiest days and the hardest days, Ken has learned that the present is where God lives. He doesn’t want to be anywhere else.

With his lack of control for the future, Ken is fully engaged in the now — and he shows those of us who watch how we were meant to live. He even manages to keep his sense of humor. On one of his Facebook posts about a new “G-tube” that made Kim more comfortable in her pain, Ken wrote that it happily “allows sneaking formerly forbidden treats like 7-Eleven Slurpees, because it doesn’t stay long enough for the sugar to be absorbed.”

Through Ken’s eyes, we are able to celebrate the blessing of Slurpees. And we are the better for it. His response to his circumstances encourages us to be present in our own lives, even when we face sorrow. And we should never stop looking for joy.

This is the gift Kim has given him.
