Each step bigger and bolder than the last.

Each step more hurried and urgent.

Until finally they were face to face.

Under the sheen of the flickering lights, the luminous green glinted off Bear’s fur and radiated out of him. April clamped her hands over her mouth.

‘Oh my,’ she murmured. ‘It really is you.’

It was like someone had raked a comb down her back. Or plucked each individual beat of her heart. Or even doused her with the radiance of a thousand suns.

The feeling was so bright, so luminous, so pure that April felt a shift somewhere in the deepest chambers of her soul. Something that had been torn into a million pieces had now been sewn back together.

She felt complete.

Not in the sense that anyone else should ever make you feel whole. But in the sense that the universe had righted itself on its axis and all was now as it should be.

He was more dazzling than she ever could have remembered. Far more beautiful than the photograph she had gazed at a trillion times, far more magnificent than any of her memories.

He was real. He was solid. He was alive.

And he was here.
