It’s even better if you have a chance to look at photos before you head to a hotspot. (Before each of my trips, I search for photos of birds I’m really hoping to see, such as “life birds” or rarities.) Think of it as a bird texting you a photo (or message) of exactly where they’re sitting in a restaurant so you can find them when you get there. Some like to lunch out in the open, others in a densely hidden picnic spot. When you arrive, keep an eye out for habitat scenes and landmarks (for example, signs, flagpoles, buildings) like those depicted in the photos. Many hotspots span a wide area, so it’s a good idea to read photo comments for specific directions or location information; also look for people with binoculars gathered around the expected habitat.
