CHAPTER 9
Mary Elle had woken up early and started baking Tiffanyâs favorite orange and date muffins. She wanted to have them ready to enjoy with coffee before going out house hunting for Melanie. After preparing the muffins, she took a long relaxing shower, and by the time she was done, it was still only 8 am. Tiffany wouldnât be there until at least 10 AM.
âYouâre up early,â Melanie said as she descended the stairs.
âYouâre up late,â Mary Elle said with a giggle. Melanie was known for waking up no later than 6 AM, even on the weekends.
âThis baby seems to mess with my sleep schedule,â Melanie said as she poured herself a glass of orange juice.
âAre you having a hard time falling asleep?â
âNo, Iâm having a hard time waking up.â
âThatâs normal. Enjoy it while you can.â Mary Elle said as she placed a couple of muffins on a plate for Melanie.
âWow, mom! These are fantastic,â Melanie said between bites.
âThereâs more,â Mary Elle said, pointing to the stack of muffins.
Melanieâs first trimester had been very trying, with lots of morning sickness and not being able to keep any food down. Sheâd lost a lot of weight, and the doctor told her she needed to gain some. He had even recommended she eat vanilla ice cream, which Mary Elle had found odd. Now that Melanie was feeling better and holding her food down, Mary Elle tried to feed her as often as possible.
There was a knock on the door that startled both of them.
âIâll get it,â Mary Elle said as she motioned for Melanie to stay seated.
She checked her watch, and it was only 8:15. Who could come over so early? Tiffany never knocked because she knew the door was usually unlocked.
When she opened the door, she was shocked at who she found standing on her front porch.
âBill? What are you doing here?â
Bill looked surprised to see Mary Elle. As if he wasnât the one that had shown up at her house unannounced.
âBill?â Mary Elle said again.
âIâm here to see my daughter,â He finally said.
âWho is it, mom?â Melanie called out from the kitchen.
Mary Elle moved to the side and let Bill walk in. He took his time making his way to the kitchen, looking at the pictures on the wall.
âDad, I didnât know you were coming,â Melanie said when she saw him.
âI wanted to surprise you, but I can leave if you all donât want me here.â
Mary Elle and Melanie locked eyes. Mary Elle could tell Melanie was just as confused as she was, but she didnât want to impede on her and her father's reunion. This was the first time Melanie saw her father since before the divorce.
âDonât leave, Bill. I was heading out to do some errands,â Mary Elle lied.
âThank you,â Bill said, and Mary Elle saw a look cross his face that she couldnât quite place.
