CHAPTER 9

Mary Elle had woken up early and started baking Tiffany’s favorite orange and date muffins. She wanted to have them ready to enjoy with coffee before going out house hunting for Melanie. After preparing the muffins, she took a long relaxing shower, and by the time she was done, it was still only 8 am. Tiffany wouldn’t be there until at least 10 AM.

“You’re up early,” Melanie said as she descended the stairs.

“You’re up late,” Mary Elle said with a giggle. Melanie was known for waking up no later than 6 AM, even on the weekends.

“This baby seems to mess with my sleep schedule,” Melanie said as she poured herself a glass of orange juice.

“Are you having a hard time falling asleep?”

“No, I’m having a hard time waking up.”

“That’s normal. Enjoy it while you can.” Mary Elle said as she placed a couple of muffins on a plate for Melanie.

“Wow, mom! These are fantastic,” Melanie said between bites.

“There’s more,” Mary Elle said, pointing to the stack of muffins.

Melanie’s first trimester had been very trying, with lots of morning sickness and not being able to keep any food down. She’d lost a lot of weight, and the doctor told her she needed to gain some. He had even recommended she eat vanilla ice cream, which Mary Elle had found odd. Now that Melanie was feeling better and holding her food down, Mary Elle tried to feed her as often as possible.

There was a knock on the door that startled both of them.

“I’ll get it,” Mary Elle said as she motioned for Melanie to stay seated.

She checked her watch, and it was only 8:15. Who could come over so early? Tiffany never knocked because she knew the door was usually unlocked.

When she opened the door, she was shocked at who she found standing on her front porch.

“Bill? What are you doing here?”

Bill looked surprised to see Mary Elle. As if he wasn’t the one that had shown up at her house unannounced.

“Bill?” Mary Elle said again.

“I’m here to see my daughter,” He finally said.

“Who is it, mom?” Melanie called out from the kitchen.

Mary Elle moved to the side and let Bill walk in. He took his time making his way to the kitchen, looking at the pictures on the wall.

“Dad, I didn’t know you were coming,” Melanie said when she saw him.

“I wanted to surprise you, but I can leave if you all don’t want me here.”

Mary Elle and Melanie locked eyes. Mary Elle could tell Melanie was just as confused as she was, but she didn’t want to impede on her and her father's reunion. This was the first time Melanie saw her father since before the divorce.

“Don’t leave, Bill. I was heading out to do some errands,” Mary Elle lied.

“Thank you,” Bill said, and Mary Elle saw a look cross his face that she couldn’t quite place.
