Chapter 7

Kara

“Does anyone care if I sit in the front?” Asha surveyed, setting her pillow and blanket there. “I get car sick if I’m in the back for too long.”

“Are you two okay with being in the back together for a while?” Mike proposed before accepting his fate of having Asha in the co-captain seat.

“I’m sure they will survive.” Asha smiled and pulled her blanket into the car and shut the door.

It was still dark outside and pretty cold. Asha and I had each brought our own pillows, some blankets, a backpack, and snacks. I piled my stuff into the back of the Camry and set up my pillows to lay against the door. Mike told me at least thirty times that I needed to be ready when he picked us up. He was, of course, thirty minutes late.

I used my blankets to cover the backseat, when Nate climbed in, he crawled in under the blanket with me but stayed on his side. When Mike was getting gas, Asha turned to us to coo,

“You two are adorable. Just try not to have sex while we’re driving. I think Mike will notice.” She smiled. “Although, I have heard you have some pretty nimble fingers.” She winked at Nate.

“Asha Mae!” I chided. “That is your last sexual joke for the entire drive.”

“What!? I can’t be out already? We have a whole day to go.”

“Zip the lip,” I said and pointed forward for her to look straight ahead. “Sorry,” I said to Nate. “She’s a morning person.”

“I know.” He had his head slumped back on the seat, as he was not a morning person. “Who do you think normally has coffee with her before you’re up?”

I placed my legs across his lap and noticed Nate’s eyes dart to where Mike would be sitting in a minute. “It’s fine, he won’t notice.”

“You’re a little risk-taker now, huh?”

I smacked my lips together sending a kiss in his direction before getting re-situated against my door and closing my eyes. His hands were over the covers but he was moving them slowly, rubbing the tops of my feet and my ankles.

It didn’t take me long to doze off.

When I woke up, the sun was high in the sky. Nate had a book resting on my feet while he was contently reading and Asha was animated as she told Mike about whatever was on her mind right now.

“Good morning, Princess!” She said when she noted my eyes were open. “I am trying to convince the guys that we need to listen to the complete Lexa Livsey album. Nate is pretending he can’t hear me because he’s reading but that is bologna with a capital G.” She laughed at her joke.

“I thought the rule was radio only, but driver’s choice.”

“It is,” Mike said sternly. I glanced at the time, we had been driving for over four hours.

“But the Liam Wyatt song featuring her came on and everyone agreed it was a good song so I’m trying to help them broaden their horizons.
