Chapter Eleven

The next morning, it was very clear to Eva that Jesse Campbell was on edge. At breakfast he kept looking over his shoulder as if expecting someone to jump out of the shadows.

He glared at the other hands and sat at a table alone with Timmy. That wasn’t strange in itself, but usually there was a little morning banter between him and the other men even if they didn’t sit together.

She shouldn’t be concerned.

Except he might scare the guests.

Glancing around the dining hall, she realized that she was the only one who noticed Jesse’s mood.

It’s not my place to step in, just because he’s in a mood, she reminded herself. I didn’t want him here in the first place.

Yet, hadn’t Dad said that she needed to work on being understanding? Well, she had come in here to eat breakfast before tackling the wedding the Lost Dutchman would be hosting in just four days. Settling down next to Timmy and across from Jesse, she said, “You’re here early.”

“Couldn’t sleep.” He kept his attention on his plate and not on her. She waited, but it soon became apparent he wasn’t going to share anything else.

“Dad changed the schedule. We’ve added a few more lessons for townies. He thinks you can handle them.”

He rearranged some of the hash browns on his plate. “I saw.”

Two-word responses weren’t getting her anyplace. “Want to tell me what’s going on?”

“What do you mean?” This time he looked at her, a let’s-get-this-over-with expression on his face.

“Since you’ve arrived, Timmy’s not willingly let you out of his sight. You’ve been pushing him away like a mother bird, telling him to come to me for his morning hose-down, wanting him to play on the playground while you work in the arena, et cetera. This morning, however, it’s you who won’t let him out of your sight. What happened yesterday when you went to see the lawyer? Did he say Timmy could be taken away from you? Is that why you’re watching him like a hawk?”

Jesse again rearranged the hash browns on his plate. Timmy followed his example.

“Come on, Jesse, who else are you going to talk to? I don’t think there’s anything in this battle I haven’t been privy to. Oh, and by the way, do you realize this is the first breakfast you haven’t said a prayer for first?”

Now he frowned, his mind momentarily off whatever was bothering him. Timmy raised an eyebrow.

“Let’s bow our heads,” Jesse said before uttering the shortest prayer Eva’d ever heard.

Right when he ended, Cook came out the swinging kitchen doors and put a plate in front of Eva. “Didn’t look like you were going to fix your own.”

Eva thanked him, picked up her fork and started rearranging her own hash browns. Cook looked at the three of them and shook his head before returning to his duties.

After the third hash brown creation, she said, “I can do this as long as you can. And both of us need to get back to work with good attitudes.
