Experiential Learning

Real-life sensory experiences fill the mind with so much coherent data that there’s no classroom comparison. Large, real-life, panoramic visual experiences can provide a cohesive understanding of a concept very quickly. Think of the difference between reading about geology and standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon. That’s why going on field trips, conducting indoor or outdoor experiments, watching an event, and seeing someone’s body language can all create nearly immediate cohesiveness in the understanding of content. Hands-on science experiments and even outdoor walks on the school campus to explore objects, plants, events, or animals can serve as a mini field trip. Observation, simply watching another person do the task, is effective when followed up by feedback (Zimmerman & Kitsantas, 2002). Adding challenge and social feedback enhances the learning. Clarity is not just an important factor in the student learning experience; it is a make-or-break factor.

Practical Suggestions for Experiential Learning

• Go on indoor or outdoor field trips.

• Conduct experiments inside or outside of class.

• At the high school level, establish business partnerships that allow for learning-to-work opportunities, career preparation, or job training.
