Advection Fog

Advection fog

Advection fog is the type of fog we see along the coasts, often as part of the marine layer, a daily sheath of fog and low clouds often seen on the California Coast west of the Coastal Range. It is caused when warm air moves over colder surfaces, like tropical air moving over the chilly Pacific, or warmer air moving over snow in the springtime.

Evaporation Fog

Evaporation fog

Evaporation fog is the result of cooler air sitting above a warm body of water. The bit of evaporation from the water immediately saturates the air above it, leading to the wispy fog often seen in the early hours above lakes and ponds.
