J. TRAPPE

Group: Basidiomycota, Geastraceae.

Season: December–June.

Distribution: From southwest Oregon and California into Mexico.

Habitat: With Douglas-fir, pine, and oak in dry, lowland forests and woodlands.

Spores: 7–8 × 4–7 µm, finely warty, brown.

Features: Globose to subglobose, felty, bruising pink. Gleba with a central, capitate columella from which radiate brown, elongated peridioles that contain the spores; the peridioles are easily teased apart. Odor mild.

Comments: First described from France, this peculiar species has since been found in the Americas. Its small size and strange gleba do not entice one to add it to the menu.

DR: Insipid.
