Oblivion (1994)

From 1989 to roughly 1998, Charles Band’s Full Moon Entertainment was at the top of its game. Full Moon was a comeback of sorts for Band, whose Italy-based Empire International Pictures collapsed from financial woes after producing and/or distributing such top-notch genre offerings as Re-Animator and From Beyond (and, okay, Troll and Zone Troopers,1 but also Creepozoids and Dolls!2). During this late-’80s to late-’90s span, the company through Band created the popular Puppet Master, Trancers and Subspecies franchises and brought unique spins to rather worn-out ideas. For Full Moon, Stuart Gordon directed the outstanding Poe adaptation The Pit and the Pendulum (1990) and brought the monster-in-the-castle story Castle Freak (1995) to new life. When his option on Marvel’s Dr. Strange character fell through, Band had the script rewritten and retooled for genre star Jeffrey Combs, and the resulting Dr. Mordrid was a lightweight but enjoyable modern sorcerer story. Because Full Moon had an output deal with Paramount Pictures during this time, the studio was able to put out expensive-looking movies without quite the budgets enjoyed by Paramount’s in-studio productions. When the money didn’t live up to the ideas, creativity was utilized, and the creativity started with the script. Almost all of the Full Moon movies during this near-decade had tight, enjoyable scripts packed with blood, humor and a good deal of what-the-hell-is-going-on?
