There was a time when xylographs by Dürer, Holbein, and Cranach sold throughout the whole of Europe. Since then much had changed. With the appearance of movable type, wood engraving virtually disappeared from books, and it was used only in rare instances – for vignettes, cheap popular prints, and playing cards. Admittedly, at the end of the 18th century, with the appearance of more powerful printing presses, engravers changed their technique slightly. Instead of using blocks cut along the grain, they worked on hard wood cut across the grain. These new-style blocks (xylographs) were particularly resistant to high pressure, did not wear out too quickly, and would stand a long print-run.
