This crucial issue raises the matter of the material used to construct the platform. Generally, the easiest materials to clean are smooth and sheer: metal, fibreglass or hard plastic, which can be easily swept and washed, and which dry quickly. Unfortunately, most platform feeders are made of wood (especially the DIY versions), which is the worst material to use. Unless it has been painted for the purpose (with non-toxic all-weather paint), wood is porous, stays damp and is extremely difficult to keep clean. The fibres and minute cracks and indentations that are almost always present on wooden surfaces are ideal places for nasty bacteria and viruses to reside. These features also make wood almost impossible to clean completely and very slow to dry. Best to avoid wood altogether. These issues actually relate to spaces, corners, edges and other structural features in any feeder where debris could build up. The key aim is to ensure there are no places where malevolent nasties can hide and flourish.

Some platform feeders have a roof over the feeding surface. This is mainly an attempt at keeping the rain off but is often not very successful. The roof structure can also deter large species from visiting.
