Maddie noticed an engraved plate on his bridle.

“Philippe,” she read. “Is that your name?”

The horse’s head bobbed, as if to say, That’s right.

“Well, I’m glad to meet you, Philippe. But I still don’t know what you’re doing here,” Maddie said.

“Maybe he’s here to help us. Just like ‘The Lion and the Mouse’!”

Maddie turned with a gasp. “What lion?”

“Not here, silly. The story. You know, the lion lets the mouse go free. And then one day the mouse comes back to help the lion.” Macy waved her hand impatiently. “The point is, we helped Philippe, and now he’s come to return the favor!”

“Maybe,” said Maddie. Or maybe he just doesn’t want to be alone, she thought.

“Is that it?” she whispered to the horse, stroking his mane. “Are you afraid to be out here alone?”

The horse nickered softly.

“Do you think he’ll let us ride him?” Macy asked.

“Let’s try,” Maddie said. “I’ll help you up.”

She cupped her hands to make a step, then boosted Macy onto Philippe’s back.

Once she was in the saddle, Macy reached down and helped Maddie up.

As soon as they were both on his back, Philippe turned and started walking in the direction of the village.
