Chapter 15

Amiah

I backed up and hit the railing, my heart pounding in a chest still tight with the pressure of the adjusted leash spell. Another gust of wind showered us with ice crystals, and three more ice men landed in front of the door.

They now blocked us from our only means of escape, and while I could release my wings and fly, I wasn’t strong enough to take Titus with me. Sure, he could also shift and fly, but that might break the glamour hiding him and leave Sebastian, Cassius, and Hawk still in the Winter Court. And the queen would be furious to know Sebastian had been hiding the last dragon and the only connection to the most powerful magic in all of Faerie right under her nose.

“Tell me where the dragon is and I’ll let you run away from court instead of killing you,” the ice man said.

Titus stepped in front of me and flexed his hands, extending his fingers into wolf-like claws. “Step away from the door and I won’t kill you.”

“This is just a construct, wolf,” the ice man said. “Destroying it won’t hurt me.”

“Sure it will,” Titus snarled back. “The harder I have to work to protect Amiah, the more I’m going to rip into you when I find you.”

“And how do you plan to do that?” another ice man asked in the same voice as the first as he dropped from the mountain face and joined the line in front of the door.

“Prince Seireadan will be able to find you.”

“Prince Seireadan will be dead just as soon as I finish with you,” the first man replied.

My pulse stalled. Sebastian was low on magic and he hadn’t had a chance to go into a pool to restore it. Had the message about removing my mating brand been a trick, a way to separate us? And how soon would the ice men attack him? How many could he fight off by himself in his condition?

“You can either join him or just become a widow,” the man said. “Tell me where to find the dragon.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said.

Another gust of wind, suddenly frigid and making me shiver, showered us with more ice crystals.

“You and your bodyguard aren’t from this realm. There’s no point in sacrificing yourself by lying.” The man took a step forward and Titus tensed. “Tell me and you can run off with him.”

“Now who’s lying,” Titus growled. “You can’t let her live. The court responds to her. You kill his highness and she becomes heir.”

The dark light inside the ice man flared. “You’re awfully knowledgeable of court ways for an outsider.”

“His highness warned me of the dangers of court politics,” Titus said.

“You will tell me where the dragon is.”

The ice man swung at Titus’s head with a powerful two-handed strike, but Titus lunged in, blocked the man’s attack, and tore his claws through the man’s arm. The man didn’t even utter a sound as his arm shattered and Titus tossed him into one of the other ice men who was blocking the door, knocking them both back.
