“Okay, go get some rest,” I order my men. “We hit the prison ship in six hours.”

They all head upstairs to go to the rec room or the crew quarters they’ve taken over. I stay in the armory, thinking. The attack on Milana’s prison ship should go pretty flawlessly given all this preparation, but it’s my nature to brood before a fight.

A wonderful smell hits my nostrils, the telltale sign of Aspen approaching. I turn just in time to see her coming down the stairs from the crew deck.

“Hey there, beautiful,” I greet her, feeling a smile come to my face. She smiles back and looks down.

“I was thinking about something,” she says, stopping in front of me.

“Oh?”

“When we board the ship later. Couldn’t we do it without killing the crew? We could memory wipe them instead. That way, they still wouldn’t be a threat to you.”

“They’re going to be shooting at us. I won’t risk my men’s lives to spare some UPE goons.”

“Not if you catch them before they get to the armory. You could get them unarmed.”

“That assumes their response time will be as poor as it was on this ship. Weren’t you just telling me last night that Captain Dithers was an incompetent idiot?”

She shuffles her feet. “Well, yes.”

“Since I can see that this matters to you, vulta, here’s what I can do: any that we are able to capture, I will not kill in cold blood. I’ll have Nilbattion administer the memory wipe, then we can throw them in the cells and send the ship at hyperspeed to some planet far from here.”

Aspen looks reassured, but not entirely. I pull her toward me, putting my hands on her waist. She smiles and nuzzles me.

“I don’t want you worrying about such things,” I tell her, leaning in to kiss her forehead. “We are Vostra. We are kings and queens. We are not concerned with the lives of peasants.”
