The oval slide catch is made in the same way as the rectangular one, just using a pair of oval domed sections.

Square tubing slide catch

Based on an ancient Egyptian example, particularly for use on a strung necklace with a radiating design.

Materials:

40mm × 4mm square tubing

20mm × 3mm square tubing

20mm × 1mm square wire

Oval bead slide catch (25mm × 12mm).

1. Closed.

2. Side one open.

3. Side two open.

4. Side view.

•Cut the 40mm of 4mm square tubing in two.

•File the ends square of all three pieces of tubing.

•Using fine wet and dry paper, sand the edges of the 3mm tubing until it slides comfortably into the 4mm tubing.

•Saw a slot into one piece of the 4mm square tubing three quarters of the way up.

•File the slot to 1mm wide.

•Put the 3mm tube inside the 4mm piece with the slot and scribe through the slot so the position is marked on the 3mm piece.

•Position the 1mm square wire carefully onto the 3mm and solder into place.

•Check it will slide into the 4mm tube and slot.

•With the 3mm tube in the 4mm tube and the wire in the slot, file away some of the wire (the wall thickness is 0.5mm and the slide should be a tight fit so some of the 1mm square wire needs to be filed down).

•Mark onto the second piece of 4mm tubing where the wire needs to solder in place.

•Hold in place with some binding wire and solder.

•Check the two pieces slide together.
