A strange combination is ‘video glasses and quadcopter’. Video eyewear works as above, only the video signal is not transferred to the PC but to a display incorporated in a pair of glasses. A flight by video glasses has already been done by many quadcopter pilots. You can thus visually feel as if you were standing directly on the command bridge of a quadcopter.

The time delay of the received signal is strong with many video glasses. This is for the normal intended use in multimedia applications not usually a big disadvantage. But if you want to control a quadcopter, it is essential to ensure that the delay is not too large – as a guideline not more than 0.2 seconds – as the control would otherwise not be possible. This is then FPV (First person view), also known as remote-person view (RPV). It is a method used to control a quadcopter or model airplanes from the pilot’s view point. Sophisticated systems include a pan- and tilted gimbaled camera which is controlled by an inertial measurement unit IMU in the pilot’s goggles. This takes the movement of the head into account. Sometimes there are even dual on-board cameras built- in, enabling a stereoscopic view.
The most common frequencies used for video transmission are 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz and sophisticated setups are capable of achieving a range of several kilometers. But in the legislation of many states all over the world, due to safety reasons this is not allowed, also due to restrictions in the transmitter power.
