Furies

“MAYBE WE COULD meet up on the island,” Harris  suggested, sort of shy. “We’ll be on Orcas for three days.”

“That would be fun,” said Odette, trying not to look too excited. “I could give you my number if you want.” Then, embarrassed, “We all share one phone. It’s a long, annoying story, but if you put my name in the text, my parents will let me know.”

“Cool,” said Harris, and they both pulled out their phones. Enviously, Odette noted that his phone was personalized, with a purple and black skull sticker on the back.

Just ahead, Orcas Island appeared out of the misty sky—bigger than she’d expected it to be, with wide double humps and an uneven curved shoreline that bent inward on itself like a horseshoe. A flock of black birds carved loose circles high up in the sky.

“Well,” said Harris, “see ya.” He turned abruptly and walked away. Odette watched him go. He walked with one shoulder—his left—slightly higher than the other.

“He seemed nice,” Mom said, and Odette could tell that she’d been waiting a few steps away, trying to give Odette her space.

“Uh-huh.” Odette knew her mom wanted her to say more than that—she could tell by the way her mom just stood there, smiling a little, waiting—but she didn’t feel like saying anything, so she turned around and headed toward the stairs.
