Chapter 17

Jason

I’d been so focused on Mira that I was completely useless at anything else last week. What I thought was a minor setback was a full-blown freak out. Mira had tried to pretend nothing happened but it was not working. Certainly not for me. Despite her attempt to look fine, she was on edge too. If only for the liters of coffee she’d been guzzling.

I had no will left to deny the fact that Mira. Got. To. Me. I was constantly aware of her presence and her reactions. Toeing the fine point of a co-worker, friend, and a potential something. I wanted to be that something. At least she was talking to me again. I had lost the ability to think last week when she was ignoring me completely.

Every little minuscule chance I had of being closer to her, I was going to take it. I’d soak in whatever I could get of her. I could not handle being completely ignored again.

A sliver of insecurity slid its way into my gut and writhed its way into my chest. When she realized I wasn’t worth a second of her time, I’d let her go.

The weekend came and I had nothing to do. I had too much energy. I was breaking out of my skin thinking about her. So when Ryan asked me if I wanted to come with him and his sister to go shopping, I agreed. I was going to be the third wheel to a brother and estranged sister during weekend bonding time. I was that desperate. I didn’t back out because I knew he wanted me there as a buffer, and he was bribing me with free food. Ryan was still extremely uncomfortable with the thought of being a brother.

“Jason!” Ryan waved from across the street. We’d agreed to meet at this train station because it was near his sister’s dormitory. I jogged over to him. Beside him was a young girl with a bright smile. “Sheila, this is Jason. Jason, this is Sheila,” he introduced us.

“She does kind of look like you.”

“Thank you!” She laughed while Ryan blushed.

“That’s our rotten father’s genes. The one good thing he gave us was our looks.” Ryan’s sister elbowed him. “Oh yeah, do you mind if we pass by the university? It’s walking distance from here. Sheila wants to check out post-graduate programs.”

“Sure.”

Minutes later, I found myself gazing up at tall majestic white pillars like I was waiting for a scolding. They put a lot of these in the university. They were all quite intimidating. Why would they do that to young minds? Then again, I guess if I were part of the institution the decor would have a different effect.

Dozens of young people carrying books and binders walked around us. It was quaint to be surrounded by youth and promise as opposed to the jaded corporate slaves I was used to. Ryan’s sister talked to the guard and waved at us to follow her.

“Can we just come in here?” I asked as we entered the gated walkway.
