Chapter 14

It’s a Friday night in the middle of December, just a few days after I went to the movies with Britt. Today, I’ve kept my promise by taking her to watch the Maryland State Football game at M&T Bank Stadium, since she’s never been to a football game before.

The stadium is packed with students and parents, almost twice as many as the turnout for our state soccer game last month. It’s halfway through and neither team has scored yet. The crowd groans as the buzzer rings, signaling the start of halftime.

Britt turns to me. “Who are we supposed to be rooting for, again?”

It’s kind of a hard call, since Somerset Valley’s upset at the semi’s prevented our high school from making it to states. “How about you root for DeMatha and I’ll side with Woodbridge, so that way at least one of our picks will win?”

She agrees and I leave during the break to go to the bathroom and get us some snacks before the third quarter begins.

Just as I near the concession stands on my way back, I run into Kimberlynn.

“Hey!” She greets me with a hug. “What are you doing here?” It’s a valid question since the only reason she’s here is because her boyfriend is on Woodbridge’s team.

“Just here with a friend.” I say. Then, because that sounds too vague, I add, “She’s never been to a high school football game before.”

“Aww, that’s cute.” Kim breaks out into a grin. “Do I know her?”

I shrug because I’m not sure if people outside of the soccer scene at our school would know Britt. “She goes to Somerset Valley with us, but is a year older. Her name’s Britt.” I gesture towards the stands. “We’re in the fifth row.”

“She’s pretty.” Kim remarks, her stare focused over my shoulder. I follow her gaze and figure that she must in fact be looking at Britt because the two of us are the only ones not dressed in spirit wear from either school. Even Kim’s wearing one of her boyfriend’s yellow jerseys.

At the moment, Britt hasn’t seemed to notice us, instead taking in the scene before her while groups of friends munch on chicken tenders and take selfies. The chilly winter breeze blows her wavy brown hair away from her face. But from this distance, you can’t see her crystal blue eyes or the freckles across her lightly tanned skin. You can’t see her ski-slope shaped nose or the little crinkles that form in the corners of her eyes when she laughs at one of my corny jokes.

Looking at her now, to say, “she’s pretty,” seems like an understatement. Because I didn’t notice it before, but Britt just might be one of the most attractive girls I’ve ever met. Even more so because it’s natural, not some clump of beauty products caked onto her face. And the fact that she doesn’t even seem to realize how beautiful she is, adds to the appeal.

Guess One Direction really was on to something there.

“Are you two dating?”

I turn back to Kim, who’s looking at me with a small smile.
