Chapter 18

It was a warzone. He was cold and tired and wet. Freddy was angry and afraid, and a burst of adrenaline pumped through his system.

The pipe in front of him didn’t stand a chance.

Freddy didn’t waste time running for the shut-off valve in the utility room. He simply grabbed the bottom and folded it in half, crimping the copper pipe and cutting off the flow of water. When he noticed the end of the pipe stuck out and could potentially skewer somebody, he folded it again until it was flush against the wall.

One problem solved.

Only one.

Possibly the last.

The dressing room renovation had been going great. Theo Poulin and a new hire, Stan Wakefield, had been working with him during demolition. They’d pulled down sheets of cracked tile and black grout in the shower. A jackhammer had taken care of the uneven, patched floor in the changing area. They’d removed the lockers and stored them in the garage with the Zamboni.

There had been a brief delay when Noah Long had to re-pipe some of the old and damaged showers, but now they were back at it. As an added bonus, Theo turned out to have a knack for tiling, which Freddy intended to put to good use. As Noah finished one wall, he and Stan drywalled, and Theo began tiling.

Things had gone so well that he’d slept in and let two of his crew come in to start drywalling the shower bays. He’d arrived fifteen minutes late to silence, then heard yelling and the sounds of splashing and gushing water.

Freddy bolted to the dressing room to find Theo hunched over, helping Stan sit on the lid of a large metal toolbox. Stan held his left arm tightly to his side and was cursing a blue streak. Both men were soaking wet, there was a huge foamy puddle in an unpatched low section of bare floor, and a showerhead laying on the floor. The pipe it had been attached to, which had been ripped off the wall, sprayed water straight up.

“What happened here?” Freddy demanded. “Are you injured? Are you bleeding?”

Theo shrugged. “I didn’t see.”

“I’ll tell you what happened,” Stan said. “I came in to get started on the drywall. I didn’t see the puddle on the floor and slipped. I grabbed the showerhead on the way down and the whole thing came right off. Shoddy workmanship. Dangerous working conditions.”

The scene said different. The water on the floor headed straight to the central drain. The puddle Stan pointed at was two showerheads over. The dangling water pipe showed no damage from being torn from the walls, and the screws that should have kept the bracket attached to the support wood lay on the floor. Freddy whipped out his phone and began taking photos of the scene. He didn’t know what his insurance company would need, but he wanted to record as much as he could, just in case.

He couldn’t undo the fall, but he could prevent another one. After he stopped the leak, he asked Theo to mop up the area.
