It may take a few days to persuade her to eat confidently from the fist, but don’t be too anxious and give her time. If she is unwilling, continue providing her full supply in her quarters. Once she has taken her first food off the fist, and eaten as much as she wants, give her the balance of her normal intake in her quarters again.
The next day, just before you intend to feed her, weigh her and make a note of the result. From this point on, feed her exclusively on the fist. She will only eat enough to satisfy her immediate hunger, which won’t be anything like the amount she has previously consumed. Which means you will begin to reduce her weight.
At first, she will take her time and it might be several minutes before she makes up her mind to eat. But what you now have to aim for is instant response. In falconry terms, “instant” means within a second or two, and it is this quality of response which will drive her training forwards enabling you to move from one stage to the next.
Bear in mind, though, that response is governed by three factors:
Hate
Habit
Hunger
