Time to Plant!

Once you’ve made your final selections, set your container on a table or someplace elevated so you can work on it at close to eye level. This really helps you monitor how all of the different elements are working together. The container you use must have at least one drainage hole. It is possible to plant in something with no drainage, but you must be extremely cautious about overwatering. If planting with no drainage holes, place a thick layer of gravel at the bottom before you add the soil so that excess water can pool below without the plant’s root system staying constantly wet. Otherwise, the plants could easily rot. Remember that roots are like wicks. If they’re touching water, they’ll keep pulling moisture up, even if the plant doesn’t need a drink. (Planting without drainage holes is definitely for more advanced gardeners.)
