Chapter 5

The Manifestation of Superhuman Powers

1. At the proper time the king of Lauḍa sent his son to the guru’s house, (where) he spent his time studying the Kalāpaka grammar and the lexica with the (other) students.

2. Kubera’s son was also in the house with the students. That subtle-minded one had mastered all of that grammar with the lexica and literary criticism in just three years.

3. And one evening the king’s son went from his guru’s house to a Devī temple with his teacher’s son and bowed to her respectfully. The teacher’s son did not bow to Caṇḍikā.

4. The prince, overcome with anger, harshly rebuked his guru’s son: “Bow to Kālī or I will beat you for this insult.”

5. Kamalākṣa, the husband of that goddess, bellowed out a loud “HUM,” and the prince collapsed on the ground, unconscious.

6. When they saw their prince lying on the ground, his trembling servants went to the king, wailing and stammering.

7. “The pandit’s son stunned the prince with his ‘HUM’ sounds. He’s collapsed on the threshold of the temple of the blessed goddess Kālī.”

8. That disturbing news upset the king, who was in the Kātyāyaṇī temple with a wise courtier, and he raced off.

9. Seeing his dear son lying dead, he fell to the ground like a mountain shattered by a thunderbolt, wailing with distress; his ministers lamented to each other.

10. Master Kubera, best of scholars, suppressed his own grief to comfort the bereaved king:

11. “O King, don’t grieve; I will bring my son here and find out what he has done, my lord.”

12. Immediately, with the king’s permission, Kubera took a lamp in his hand. Distressed in his thatched hut in the forest, he kept saying “O Son” over and over. He wandered all over the country, and the great brahmin saw him emerging from an anthill, as the sage Vālmīki had appeared from an anthill.

13. He lifted his son onto his lap and firmly but calmly demanded, “Tell me the truth, son, what happened to the prince?”

14. Kamalākṣa demurred and told his father Kubera, “The prince became furious and said some bad things. He has only fainted.”

15. They continued talking on their way back to the unconscious prince in the temple of the goddess.

16. Divyasiṃha saw them coming, and with trembling heart he rose quickly, bowing. The king spoke to the son of the best of sages with the words, “Tell me, has my poor son been embraced by the fire of Brahmā because of a guru’s anger? How can anyone civilized take offense when a wise man speaks the truth?”

17. When Kamalākṣa heard this he was ashamed and told the king, “The fire of raging anger has not killed him; he is (only) unconscious.

18. Sprinkle holy Gaṅgā water (lit., water from Viṣṇu’s feet) all over his body, and he will regain consciousness and we’ll all be very happy.”

19. As soon as he had heard that good news, the king joyfully gave the boy the foot-water from a śālagrāma brought by a brahmin.
