SUMMER HOLIDAYS

It is celebration time. This is the last day of school. The school year is coming to an end. We are getting out for summer holidays, three glorious weeks of no teachers, uniforms or school dinners. Everyone is happy and smiling including our teachers. We are celebrating today in the playground. The swings are full. Spinning tops and skipping ropes are being put to good use. Even the local kids are joining in our glee. There is not even one fight. Across the playground someone has started a Conga line and everyone is running to join in. Angela and I run joyously to catch on to the end. We weave around the playground laughing and singing. We go all the way around those awful smelly lavatories, around to the front of the school and back into the playground, screeching at the top of our lungs. All of our troubles seem so far away at this point. There is nothing like a good Conga line to make your spirits rise. We all collapse onto the playground, laughing so hard that we are fit to burst. Poor Mrs Allen she has so much to look forward to, three whole weeks. That’s twenty one days and equals two hundred and fifty two hours of us. Whoopee. The big question is which of us will survive the ordeal? The next morning there is so much excitement at the house. We have received a letter form Mummy with great news. Our Uncle Ivan is home on leave in London and will come down to visit us. He will be arriving in two days and will spend three or four days with us. Yippee. I adore him and I think that he is so handsome. I can’t wait to see him. I know that he will be absolutely smashing in his Captain’s uniform. All of the other kids will be so envious. I am so proud of him. Mum says he will be staying at the Blue Anchor Pub overlooking the harbour. Oh, please, please be in your uniform when you get here. The next two days are the longest in history. I am sure that Mrs Allen will be glad to get us out from under foot for a few days. She has already told us that she doesn’t want us around the house while we are on our holiday from school. She tells us she will pack our lunches and we should
