I had a really amazing childhood. I grew up half in the city, half in the country. In the country, you know, where Boy was set, it was pretty different times from now, like where kids were brought up to look after each other and given a lot more freedom. A difference from now where children’s whole lives are organized, regimented.44

Accordingly, much of Boy’s comedy is childish and playful, even infantile (“Kingi shat his pants!”), again characteristic of comedian comedy.45 The humorous use of children offsets to some degree the representation of Māori stereotypes: a tight shot of Boy’s grandma framed in the window of a departing car, saying “Goodbye, my mokos” (mokopuna, or grandchildren) is followed by a shot of the mokopuna—pushing the car. Another gag addresses racism, although “reverse racism,” a characteristic Waititi technique:
