Beasts of Burden

Perhaps one of the most intriguing uses for a goat is as a pack animal. Pack goats are used in mountainous regions or on open trails, wherever a beast of burden can be advantageous. There are companies who deal in pack goat gear, offering miniature-size panniers, saddles, and other goat accoutrements.

Due to the fact that goats are herd animals, they seek companionship. That can come in the form of another goat, another animal species, or from humans. This makes them perfect for hiking, as they will literally follow the leader. A well-muscled goat can carry 20 to 30 percent of its body weight. Larger breeds are most appropriate: Nubians, Saanens, Oberhasli, Toggenburgs, and Alpines are good choices for pack goat training. Training begins when the animal is quite young, with small packs introduced at first. The animal becomes accustomed to carrying larger and larger packs as it grows. Some trainers specialize in working with pack goats and breeders who sell goats with skills developed specifically for packing.
