A sketch showing the spectacular Leonid meteor shower in 1833

For the first time, astronomers studied meteor showers. They became convinced that meteors came from beyond the earth’s atmosphere. A shower followed a path that intersected the orbit of the earth. Meteoroids were scattered all along the path. When earth crossed the meteoroid path, a meteor shower would happen. Astronomers could predict meteor showers.

Every year in November, shooting stars came from the region of Leo the Lion. The shower became know as Leonids. But meteoroids were not equally spread out along the Leonid’s orbit. A cluster of them stayed together. Every 33 years, the Leonids were especially numerous. Rather than a meteor every minute or so, more than a thousand a minute lighted the night sky.

Especially heavy showers became known as meteor storms. The Leonids have not been as vivid lately as they were two hundred years ago. One shower that continues to be strong is the Perseids, which peak on August 12 of each year at over one meteor per minute.
