Chapter 4

James was out the door in a rush, having an early appointment with a new client at the office and saying he didn’t want to risk being stuck in traffic again. Charlotte smiled at him as he said goodbye, tossing his phone to him as he nearly left without it. Only then did she grab her own phone and check her messages, having silenced the ringer last night after the near-discovery.

And there it was. She had a text with an address, today’s date, and a time. She was supposed to arrive at nine o’clock. It was a relief of sorts; she could sneak out and do this while James was at his dinner event, and he would never be the wiser. It would also leave her free tomorrow night so he wouldn’t question for a second the story she was telling about meeting a client. She could even put on a happy face and join him for the date he’d proposed, which of course, had been completely out of character for him anyway.

It eased her mind, though she was still nervous as hell, and that only escalated as she drove to the gallery. As usual, Kasey was already there, greeting her with what may have been the biggest grin she’d ever seen on the girl’s face. “Guess who sold two of Sasha Bennett’s Early Industrial Series paintings last night.”

Charlotte was impressed. “Really? That’s huge, Kasey. Congrats on the sale. Who bought them?”

“His name was Andre Gudor. He said he’d caught wind of your gallery from his very close friend, Mrs. Rowena Faust and had to see it for himself. Of course, he was disappointed you weren’t here, but he was a lovely French man who told me he would definitely be back for more and to meet you.”

She didn’t recognize the name, but she was sure she could find plenty of information on him if he had the kind of money it took to walk out of here with two Bennett works on a whim. “Well, I look forward to meeting him as well. And since you made the sale, I’m going to give you half the commission.”

Kasey’s jaw dropped. “You can’t be serious. That’s, like, $3000.”

“Actually, it’s…” she punched some numbers into the calculator, “$3250. And you deserve it. I’ll make you another deal. We’ll work it that way from now on if I need to leave for any reason. Also, I’d like you to join me at the show next week.”

Looking blindsided, Kasey shook her head. “No way. Charlotte, I’m perfectly happy with the salary you pay me and the education I’m getting here. And half the time, I’m doing homework here anyway. I couldn’t take that money. And about the show…those people want to hear from an expert like you, not someone still in college.”

But Charlotte had made up her mind. She needed someone to cover for her, if she actually decided to continue in this club, and she didn’t trust anyone but Kasey. ”You are an expert on everything we have as well as all of our artists.
