Boys and girls, I know you are very curious about all of the objects I put on the counter. Today we are going to investigate the properties of these various objects and sort them into different categories according to those properties. Properties are characteristics of objects. The teacher writes the list of properties up on the board: size, shape, hardness, and sinks/floats . Let’s read through the list together.

The teacher gives each pod of four students a blank copy of the sorting chart shown in its completed version in Figure 3.2 . She assigns roles for each student in a group: Recorder, Observers 1 and 2, and Manipulator (the student who will place the objects in the water). She then explains the attributes of each of the categories and asks the students how they can classify the objects in the categories. Students discuss in their groups how they can see size and shape but need to put the object in water to see if it floats or sinks. The teacher walks around and guides groups to think through how to test properties before they start the investigation.

Once all students have manipulated the objects and each group has completed its properties chart, the teacher leads a discussion about conclusions the students have made. They agree after much discussion and replication that objects that are hard, heavy, and solid sink in the water. Objects that float are more lightweight and flexible. Wood is lighter than metal. Plastic is lighter than glass. The students have been able to examine similarities and differences in critical content, deepen their knowledge, and will continue to build knowledge as they do experiments at home with various objects.
