Historical Research Needed

Dr. Wolfhart Pannenberg, professor of systematic theology at the University of Munich, observes, “The decision on the issue of the resurrection of Jesus as an event in the history of humankind is . . . a matter of purely historical examination of the early Christian tradition and of specifically historical judgment not of a prior determination.”13 In other words, we must do our historical research and let the determination rest solely on the evidence, not on any preconception or bias against supernatural occurrences.

Dr. John Warwick Montgomery, writing about those who still adhere to the concept of nature as a closed system (where all events must have a natural explanation), says:

Since Einstein, no modern has had the right to rule out the possibility of events because of prior knowledge of “natural law.” The only way we can know whether an event can occur is to see whether in fact it has occurred. The problem of miracles, then, must be solved in the realm of historical investigation, not in the realm of philosophical speculation.14
