MAKING GOOD CONTACT WITH THE E COLLAR

Making good consistent contact with the e collar is one of the biggest problems we have as e collar users. One of the biggest mistakes I see is people putting the collar on way too loose. In order to make good consistent contact the collar must be very snug so the contact points make contact to the skin. You should never be able to move the collar around without loosening it.

Let’s discuss a few tips to help with better contact. First make sure the dog’s neck is brushed out very well. Dead hair will prevent good contact. When putting the collar on have the dog in a down or stand position. This puts the dog’s neck in a good neutral position making it easy for a true fit on the neck. When the dog is sitting in front of you they tend to look up or down putting the neck in a bad position for true e collar fitting. As soon as the neck goes to a true neutral position the collar comes loose.

Place the collar high on the neck off to one side or the other. Placing the collar higher up behind the ear helps with dogs that have long hair or loose skin. Once you pull the straight end of the collar strap through the buckle loop be sure to take your finger and pull the dog’s hair out from the buckle. Pull all the hair out or you will think you have a tight fit when in reality the hair is preventing good snug contact. Many times when you get the collar buckled and the dog relaxes his neck you will have to go back and make it one or two holes tighter. When fitted properly you should barely be able to get two fingers under the collar strap on top of the neck.

Also be sure to use the appropriate length contact points. Short hair dogs can use short contact points. Longer hair dogs may need longer contact points. Don’t assume that using the longest contact points will make for better contact. Very long points can cause the receiver to be pushed on its side when tightened properly. The longer points can push the receiver to a poor position and that is not what we want.
