Here’s another way to think of it. Love requires a relationship, and relationships are never unilateral. If I tell someone I love him or her and that person chooses not to reciprocate in any way, there is nothing there; there’s no relationship. One person alone expressing love for someone else does not constitute a relationship. It has to go both ways.

Of course, we’ve all heard about those people who are a little wacky and who love someone who doesn’t know they exist, and they imagine a relationship with that person. But those people usually end up being stalkers.

For love to exist, the possibility of rejecting that love also has to exist, and the logical extension of that rejection is hell.
