GUEST LESSON: JAMES BEST

He was born Jewel Jules Franklin Guy in Powderly, Kentucky. We knew him best as James Best, the prolific performer whose film credits ranged from Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart to the low-budget horror flick The Killer Shrews. Best guest starred on more than 280 episodes of various television shows, including Bonanza, Rawhide, Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, Have Gun—Will Travel, The Fugitive, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (with Pat Buttram and Collin Wilcox in an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s “The Jar”). Fans of The Andy Griffith Show remember him as guitar-playing Jim Lindsey in two episodes. But Best achieved his greatest fame as bumbling Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane in the long-running CBS series The Dukes of Hazzard. He made three splendid appearances on The Twilight Zone: as guitar-playing Johnny Rob in writer-director Montgomery Pittman’s “The Grave” (in which he dares Lee Marvin’s character to visit the grave of his rival gunman), as the title character in Pittman’s “The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank” (playing a man who puts an abrupt end to his funeral by sitting up and leaving his coffin), and as Billy Ben Turner in Earl Hamner Jr.’s “Jess-Belle” (in which a witch’s love potion puts him under a spell). He sent this guest lesson just three weeks before his death at eighty-eight from complications of pneumonia in Hickory, the North Carolina town he called home since 2006.

If there is one thing I learned about The Twilight Zone, it’s this … actually, it is more like three things. Don’t ever take a dare, or you might end up bewitched or dead for three days.
