“Where did you get it? Did it sprout up in those hills? You hunted down retreating warriors and took their weapons.” He demands to know where the farmers are hiding other stolen spears: “If you’ve got one, you must have more.”

The screenplay translates his words with a more ominous accusation: “You don’t get spears like that unless you take them from dead samurai.” And, of course, the audience recalls Rikichi’s reproach about just such a thing!

Lesson Learned:

Kurosawa brilliantly integrates the “samurai mapping committee” and its exploration of the compass points of the village — its landscape’s assets and vulnerabilities — with the promising military training of the farmers, while upholding the apprehensions between villagers and samurai. Here is an example of masterful epic cinema: time is not expanded or created by isolated elements, but by a full and rich inclusion of characters and events. 
