Putting up a list of prewritten rules isn’t going to win over any hearts early in the year. But if you include your students in the process of establishing classroom guidelines, they’ll feel emotional ownership of those rules and will be more likely to stick to them.

How is this accomplished? It isn’t as challenging as starting a fire in the rain, but it does take some time.

Start by brainstorming a list together. Encourage everyone to participate, and add ideas yourself. You might want to break the class into small groups to work together, which can encourage participation and generate more ideas.

BTW: Your first priority is to keep all of your students safe, both physically and emotionally. Never forget that. I used to tell my upper-grade students that our class was a democratic dictatorship. “We all get a say, but if there’s a fire drill or someone is in danger, I make the call.”
