Chapter 10

Angelic Interaction: Dangerous or Divine?

by Charity Kayembe

One of my favorite comments from a blog reader was: “These angel posts are priceless. They make heavenly encounters more about lifestyle, and make the Kingdom of God habitational rather than visitational…”

I love the idea that it doesn’t have to be “encounters” or “visitations” where angels come and go. They are always with us! We can always take the initiative to step into this realm and live to this Kingdom reality anytime we choose.

Take It or Not

But I wondered, is that right? Are we really supposed to be taking initiative? Jesus said He did nothing on His own initiative, but only what He saw Father doing (see John 5:19-20). Obviously, we want to be like Jesus, so we shouldn’t be taking the initiative (see John 5:30).

However, Scripture encourages us over and over to be proactive in our walk in the spirit: set your mind on the spirit (see Rom 8:5), keep seeking the things above (see Col. 3:1-3), look at the things that are unseen (see 2 Cor. 4:18). The Bible makes it clear we should take the initiative to live by the Spirit.

Then God showed me that it’s not one or the other, but both. Jesus could only relinquish His initiative after He had taken the initiative to step into the spirit realm.

Because if we don’t take the initiative and step into the supernatural realm, meet Jesus and His angels, and find out what they are up to, we are forced to take the initiative with every other thing we do and say. If we live outside of the spirit, we make decisions based only on what we can see and hear in the natural world.

However, if we simply choose to take the initiative to step into the sacred supernatural, to look for vision, to listen to Heaven—take the initiative to live into the spirit realm, that’s it! That’s the only initiative we need to take. We are then positioned to see what Father’s doing and hear what angels are saying, so we can work together with them and live like Jesus, who was only moved by what He perceived in the supernatural realm.

What Not to Do

We are often much too passive in our walk in the spirit. We put it all on God and say, “Well, if He wants me to see or hear an angel then He should just knock me off my feet with a blinding light like Saul. That’s the way He did it in the Bible!”

While God can do that, that is obviously not His preferred method of communication. God can also make a donkey talk to you, but these scriptural examples are not anything we want to emulate. More than anything, they are examples showing us what not to do.

Does God need to blind us for three days in order for us to hear His message? If I am a prophet, and my donkey has more spiritual discernment than I do, I think I need to reconsider my vocation.
