16 JULY | HUMMINGBIRD HAWK MOTH
Now, these creatures are not common, so they really have no place in this book.
Yet they are such an exotic visitor – one of the fastest insects around and they really look like nothing else – so let’s make an exception. They are also visiting the UK more and more as our summers have become warmer.
There are lots of hawk moths but this one behaves like a hummingbird: hovering stock-still in front of a flower with its long, camouflaged body tilted sharply downwards. By completely separate evolutionary processes the moth and the hummingbird have devised the same strategy for feeding from flowers while in flight.
Hummingbird hawk moths visit us from southern Europe and deserve a special mention as an omen of good luck. While the D-Day ships were sailing south in June 1944, they encountered a swarm of these unmistakable insects heading in the opposite direction.
