GO SEMINOLES!

Florida State University athletes proudly bear the name of Seminoles—the only Native American tribe never conquered by the U.S. government. In the early days, the Indian image presented by the school was Hollywood-based and bore little relationship to the Indians of the Florida Seminole tribe. But in the 1960s both students and faculty began to question this representation as possibly being offensive to the Florida Seminoles. With the guidance of Joyotpaul Chaudhuri, FSU professor and American Indian expert, and his wife Jean, an Indian activist, the school and student body built a better understanding of Native Americans and the Seminoles in particular. Several meetings were arranged between the tribe and the school resulting in a close relationship characterized by mutual respect and friendship. FSU students consider it a great honor to be selected to portray “Osceola,” the great Seminole warrior, who rides the horse “Renegade” during football games. The clothing the warrior wears is made by the Florida Seminole tribal women. Tribal members are on campus each year to crown the Homecoming Chief and Princess with Seminole regalia. The university has honored the Seminoles with several large bronze statues on campus.
