Chapter Five

Patrick climbed up the stairs of Evan’s excavator and banged on the door.

“What is it?” shouted Evan over the roar of the engine after he wrenched open the door.

“You see the inspector? She got here about half an hour ago.”

Evan shook his head. He’d been so involved in his task, he hadn’t even stopped for his morning coffee break. “I don’t even want to hear about her. Until she’s gone, we won’t get cut any slack around here. It’s not the same without Cassidy in the office, either.”

He missed driving to work with her in the mornings, giving her a private kiss before he’d head off to the pit. Break times were a chance to spend a few minutes with her, learn something new about the woman who’d quickly become the center of his universe.

“She’s cute.”

Evan frowned. “You serious?”

Patrick shrugged. “Long dark hair and plenty of curves. Come see for yourself.”

Although they’d all had their fair share of women before Cassidy moved to Climax, things were different now. For him, anyway. Patrick might be the only loose cannon when it came to committing, but he thought his friend had stronger feelings for Cassidy than a fleeting attraction. Evan couldn’t even entertain the idea of another female. It was just another reason Garret should have marked her. It would have cemented the bond, making it impossible for any of the pack to desire a woman other than their own.

“I’ll pass. By all means, don’t hold back on account of me. I’ll be sure to let Cassidy know about your new conquest.”

“Don’t be an asshole.” Patrick climbed down from the truck, landing heavily on the ground in a blur of dust.

Evan had been torn lately with the need for revenge on the loggers and the battle within him—the one luring him to defy his alpha for a woman. He had to obey orders. He’d promised himself never to trust his own intuition again. It had gotten his old pack killed. It was only his new love for Cassidy that sparked his frequent wayward thoughts. Life had been simple before she showed up in Climax but also nothing to covet.

After another hour of nonstop excavating, he decided he’d had enough for a while. He set out for the construction trailer to get a water bottle. Before he reached it, he was intercepted by Garret and the inspector.

“Evan, this is Samantha Tanner.”

She held out her hand. Patrick was right. The inspector was attractive. Normally the pack would be all over her, like bears to honey. He wondered if the bonding he felt for Cassidy extended to all his pack. “You can call me Sam.” Evan introduced himself and then nodded, hoping to be on his way.

“I want you to stay on-site tonight. All week actually,” said Garret. “I’d feel better with one of my most reliable men watching over our guest.”

Evan’s heart began to race. It was bad enough that he already had withdrawal after not seeing Cassidy half the day. Now Garret
