Visual-Spatial STM: Recognition of Pictures

During this subtest, the examinee is shown a picture of one or more familiar objects for 5 seconds, and then must select the previously viewed object(s) from a response page that includes distracters. Although examinees might subvocally name the objects during this activity, it seems to be primarily measuring visual-spatial STM.

Executive WM: Recall of Digits Backward

Like Digits Forward, the Digits Backward items are presented at the rate of two digits per second. Historically, digits backward tasks have been considered valid measures of executive WM, because manipulation of the digits is required in order to reverse the sequence. However, digits backward taxes executive WM only in a minimal manner, as no distractors are introduced and there is no multimodel processing. Consequently, under the integrated model of working memory, digits backward might be a better fit for verbal WM. Nonetheless, for the sake of consistency, it is allowed as an executive WM measure in the DAS-II and other scales that include it.
