One of the biggest challenges for anyone attempting to notate percussion parts is that there is no absolute standard of notating percussion instruments. The notation for certain instruments, such as the snare drum and bass drum, have become relatively standardized over the years. However, when it comes to instruments of indefinite pitch, a look through a variety of published literature shows a lack of a standardized system.

Therefore, it is impractical to assign a permanent line or space to specific percussion instruments, although seemingly logical. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to achieve a reasonable level of consistency. The following suggestions should be helpful in the notation of clear percussion parts for a variety of uses.
