Ewan Robertson designed the cover. He started as my intern in 2005. I remember him coming in very early on and saying that he was a graphic designer, and he wanted to design some covers, and I said, ‘There’s no fucking chance you’ll be designing covers. You’ll be making tea and stuffing envelopes and all of that shit.’ And then of course it turned out that he was remarkably talented. So that was what he did.

The cover fitted the mood. It was a statement of intent and seriousness, but the black playground also captured the Eskimo sound, the playfulness, but also the frozen heart. I was very nervous about the shoot, because Wiley was nervous at that time about being on the streets. It wasn’t just him. We had grime artists visiting Kennington who would be followed by local youths. It was genuinely dangerous, and Victoria Park, where we did the shoot, was particularly dangerous. There were all these Hackney gangs that would have been very keen to come across Wiley. He wouldn’t have been able to walk around Hackney for five minutes without being set upon.

The scene was quite violent at that time, as well. There was his clash with God’s Gift, and the clash with Ghetts, for example. There were stories around some of the people in the Roll Deep camp, for example. But I didn’t really see it. Whenever I arrived at the studio it was like the teacher had turned up. Everyone was on their best behaviour.
