“Quick!” Imo shouted. “Lock the door!”

“You can’t lock your grandmother out,” Mrs. T. said. And then after a split second added, “But I can!”

Mrs. T. lunged for the door and turned the lock.

“What on earth?” they could hear Gigi mutter, and then she pressed the doorbell again. Ding-dong! Ding—ZZTT!

“Ow!” Gigi shouted from outside.

“All of you have to hide, Ms. Dowen,” Cal said. “Our grandma doesn’t have patience for clowns.”

With a nod, Ms. Dowen agreed, “…who does?…”

“Please, you’ve got to get them out of sight!” Mrs. T. whispered urgently. “We have some tough news to tell Gigi about the house, and this will just make it harder!”

Ms. Dowen clapped her hands and the clowns scattered. Actually, they capered, romped, jumped, and skipped to different hiding spots in the hall and nearby rooms. Ms. Dowen shuffled toward the kitchen.

Once the Clown Patrol was out of sight, Cal waited for the family to gather behind him. After a quick nod from his dad, Cal opened the door. As it swung open, there was a crash and then a wacky giggle. One of the clowns had thrown himself behind the coatrack in the front hall and knocked it over.

“Grandma Gigi!” Cal shouted extra loudly to cover up any racket.
