Critical Developmental Pathways

At the core of the SDP is a focus on holistic child development along six interlocking pathways: physical, linguistic, ethical, social, psychological, and cognitive (Figure 9.1).

Physical

This pathway is concerned with promoting children’s physical health. It includes good nutritional education and programs, physical health education and activities, and access to health and dental care education and services. Within this pathway, we also ensure that children’s vision and hearing are checked as regularly as needed to ensure that they can see to read and hear well enough to learn and to understand subject matter content.

Linguistic

This pathway is concerned with helping children develop appropriate written and spoken language skills. An essential aspect of children’s being healthy and maintaining their good physical and psychological health is the ability to articulate their needs, express their points of view, and engage in meaningful and constructive conversation with others. Success in school and in life to a large extent depends on one’s ability to communicate effectively through the written and spoken word.
