On “three” Mickey pushed off from the platform as Gus yanked him into the air. They went sprawling onto the upper-level platform.

Petetronic spun around and let loose with another stream of thinner. Gus and Mickey managed to dodge the assault again.

“No fair!” Petetronic roared. He stomped his feet with such force that Mickey bounced a few inches off the ground.

“Pete always wins!” Petetronic moaned and stomped again.

“He’s having a temper tantrum,” Mickey said, struggling to stay upright as Petetronic’s thunderous stomps shook the platform. “He’s just a big baby.”

“An unhappy, potentially lethal baby,” Gus pointed out.

Mickey knew he had to take action—he had to get that missing rocket part. And this was just the first rocket component they had to collect before he could get home.

Mickey gripped his paintbrush, preparing to release a barrage of his own thinner. At the last moment, he switched hands. Didn’t Gus tell him that paint could turn enemies into allies?

He flung paint at Petetronic with all his might. As he did, Petetronic blasted thinner onto the platforms.

“Look out, Mickey!” Gus shouted. “The platforms are vanishing again!”

Mickey stopped his paint assault on Petetronic and quickly painted in the platforms before he fell into the abyss. Luckily, Gus could fly and wasn’t in danger.

“Distract him!” Mickey cried.

“Will do!” Gus flew around Petetronic, trying to draw his fire.

First, Mickey flung paint onto Petetronic to slow him down. As Petetronic lumbered around after Gus, he turned his back on Mickey. Now the mouse could aim directly at Petetronic’s tanks. Mickey shot more and more paint at the tanks, until the reservoirs were completely full. Finally, drenched in paint, Petetronic stopped his attack. He turned and smiled.

“Mickey, old pal,” he said, his grin broadening. “So glad you could drop by. Was there something I could help ya with?”

Mickey blinked and then stared at the paintbrush. Wow. It really could turn an enemy friendly. He thought again about all the destruction the thinner had caused—to Wasteland, to the clock tower. Paint was a lot more fun.

“Come to think of it, Pete, there is,” Mickey said. “See that disc sitting on the front of your platform? We could really use it.”

“This old thing?” Petetronic picked up the disc. “Not even sure why I have it.”

“You mind if we take it?” Gus asked.

“Not at all.” Petetronic tossed the piece up to Gus, who quickly flew back to join Mickey.

“Thanks,” Mickey said.

“Don’t be such a stranger,” Petetronic called behind them as they hurried away.

“One down, two to go,” Gus said cheerfully.

“I like this stuff,” Mickey said, admiring the brush. “It sure had a good effect on ole Pete.”

“Paint won’t always be the right choice, you know,” Gus warned. “Sometimes a foe simply has to be vanquished. They can’t all be changed. The hard part is knowing what to do and when.”

Mickey sighed. To him, it all seemed like the hard part.
