There is so much more that must be touched on however! During our trips to Istanbul we had the opportunity to see many sacred monuments from antiquity, including an Egyptian obelisk of Tuthmoses III that was brought to Istanbul, and a serpent pillar that was brought there from ancient Delphi, and another pillar said to have been erected by Templars to mark an underground vault. Some Rosicrucian traditions maintain that Tuthmoses III was the personality who started the western mystery tradition itself. Local rumor states that there is also a secret Masonic lair underneath these monuments, but if there was, then nobody let us in! However we did get to tour underground ruins that ran under the city, including the ancient cistern network, and no, there was not a Masonic lair down there either, but we did find two huge carved heads of Medusa, one with her eyes open and one with her eyes closed. The Medusa stones each formed a corner stone of the Cistern network, and there were various theories on why Medusa was used as a stone under the pillars which helped hold up the room above the cistern. One theory is that when the new Christians of the city sought to build, that they endeavored to drown the earlier Pagan traditions, and so Medusa was placed in the water of the Cistern. This theory is very popular by the local inhabitants, though I do not personally subscribe to this theory, particularly since they went to so much trouble to move Pagan monuments from Greece and Egypt to the new city of Constantinople. The other theory, which is more likely, is that Medusa was known for turning things to stone with her stare, and in fact it was believed in myth that her head being thrown in the ocean caused water to turn to stone, thereby forming the coral reefs. If you were trying to build on top of a water system, I can think of no better stone to build it on than the head of Medusa, since this would ensure a strong stone foundation that would not be eroded by the water of the cistern itself.
